Within the framework of the Riga Photography Biennial 2018, the Rogier Arents solo exhibition Heart Bloom will be on view in Gallery RIXC.
The installation Heart Bloom by Dutch artist Rogier Arents measures heartbeat and visualises its data in the shape of a flower using a plotter pen. The rhythm of the pen and its ‘path’ are linked to a physical source, for example, a heart rate monitor, and creates a new way of visualising personal health information.
The current image culture veers towards visualising things that cannot be observed directly. Image itself has also undergone a lot of changes – it has become a dynamic system that can change depending on each situation. This work has been used in communication with children suffering from heart disease, helping them to hear and sense their own heartbeat whilst observing flowers that ‘bloom’ with each beat of their heart.
Rogier Arents (1987) is a designer and graphic artist based in Rotterdam. Through interdisciplinary collaboration he seeks artistic ways to transfer knowledge and embed newly-developed technologies within society.
Riga Photography Biennial, an international contemporary art event, will take place from 5 April in Riga, Liepāja, Cēsis, Daugavpils and Tartu (Estonia) as part of a wider programme celebrating the centenary of the Republic of Latvia, offering a varied programme of exhibitions, performances, symposium, discussions and masterclasses.
The theme of this year’s Biennial is self-awareness – who we are and who we chose to become in times when social, political and cultural dynamics afford us continuous and new transformation opportunities. The title of the Biennial ‘I Like Your Face’ using face as a metaphor highlights the complex processes involved in the formation of identity and meaning.
